How to Choose Replacement Bushings for Skateboard and Longboard Trucks

Bushings are essential urethane components of skateboard and longboard trucks. They sit around the kingpin bolt, between the baseplate and the hanger, and are secured by the kingpin nut.

Their main job is to define the responsiveness and smoothness of your turns. Both the durometer (hardness) and the shape of the bushings have a direct impact on how your board handles.

Bushing Hardness: Which One Should You Choose?

Just like skateboard wheels, bushing hardness is measured on the durometer A scale. A higher value means harder bushings, ideal for more stability and less sensitivity when turning. Softer bushings, on the other hand, offer quicker response and increased maneuverability.

Choosing Based on Rider Weight

Your body weight plays a big role in selecting the right hardness:

  • Up to 75 kg (165 lbs): bushings between 86A and 90A for smoother turns.

  • For riders who prefer a stiffer feel and more control, we recommend bushings in the 91A to 95A range.

These values are only guidelines: some heavier riders may still prefer softer bushings for a looser, more surfy ride.

< 65 kg (143 lbs)81–85A86–90A
65–80 kg (143–176 lbs)86–90A91–95A
80–90 kg (176–198 lbs)91–95A96–100A

You can filter bushings by hardness to easily find the ones that best match your setup and riding style.

Bushing Shapes and Their Impact on Turning

Bushings differ not only in hardness but also in shape. Here are the most common types:

  • Conical: more responsive, allowing for quick and fluid turns.

  • Cylindrical (Barrel): provide greater stability, perfect for riders who want controlled turning.

  • Special shapes: in longboarding, specific bushing profiles are used for disciplines such as carving, downhill, or freeride.

Bushings for Skateboard Trucks

Skateboard trucks mainly use conical and barrel bushings. Some brands mix the two, with a barrel bushing on the bottom and a conical on top for an optimal balance between stability and agility. Others prefer conical bushings on both sides for a looser, more responsive ride.

When choosing replacement bushings, the best tip is to check which ones your trucks originally came with. If you want to keep the same riding feel, stick to the same combo. But if you’re looking to tweak your turning response, feel free to experiment with different shapes and durometers.

Bushings for Longboard Trucks

Longboards use a wider variety of bushings compared to skateboards. In addition to the classic conical and barrel shapes, you’ll also find:

  • Tall Bushings: allow for deeper turns, perfect for more pronounced carving.

  • Stepped Cone and Double Stepped Barrel: designed for downhill, delivering maximum stability even at high speeds.

Always check the compatibility of the bushings with your trucks to achieve the performance you’re looking for.

The Importance of Washers

Washers are metal components that work together with bushings, placed above and below them to help distribute pressure evenly. There are different types:

  • Flat washer: allows more freedom of movement.

  • Cup washer: provides extra support, reducing bushing deformation.

Washers protect bushings from premature wear and help maintain a consistent turning response. The only exception are Bones Hardcore bushings, which feature a hard plastic core and do not require traditional washers.
